Top 5 Ways Of Maintaining Your Focus

· Leadership

Your success is determined by your level of focus. There is no limit to how far you can go when you learn to eliminate distractions and retain your focus throughout the day. If you can focus on your present task for the period you are supposed to, success is inevitable. You will get more done, meet deadlines, reach daily goals, and keep getting closer to your ultimate goal. Nonetheless, if you give in to everything that’s vying for your attention, you won’t go far.

So, how do you maintain your focus and ensure success?

1. Start your mornings right.

The way you start your mornings determines how the rest of your day is going to be. If you begin your day with the right attitude and wake up with an “I am ready to make things happen” attitude, you will feel energized to get to work. However, if you start your day lazily and grouchily getting your mind to focus would be difficult.

2. Exercise.

Exercising is one of the best ways of ensuring you maintain your focus and keep your mind alert. Therefore, include working out on your daily schedule and make it a priority to exercise for at least 20 minutes a day. It could be jogging, stretching, or playing your favorite sport.

Maintaining your focus also involves eating healthy. So, in addition to exercising, be conscious of what you eat, and avoid foods that drain your energy.

3. Plan your day right.

One of the main things that make it hard for you to retain your focus is that you may be failing to plan your day right. You don’t have a list of priorities and you take on anything that comes your way. So, make sure you create a to-do list each morning, allocate time to tasks, and concentrate on them. Having lists and setting deadlines for yourself is an excellent way of staying on track and improving your performance as well as focus.

Planning your day right involves working on difficult or more demanding tasks during the hours when you are most effective and active. Hence, if you are a morning person, focus on challenging tasks during the early hours of the morning. If you work best in the evening, work on difficult tasks in the evening. This will not only improve your productivity but your focus as well.

4. Eliminate distractions.

How many times have you thought “Let me just quickly respond to this message and get back to work” only to end up responding to countless messages and doing other activities that have nothing to do with the task in hand? Distractions always find a way into your work. How you respond to them makes all the difference.

Eliminating distractions is the most effective method of completing your tasks and maintaining your focus throughout the day. You know what you are aiming for and say “That can wait.”

5. Work deeply.

The key to preserving your focus when working is to work deeply. Deep work, according to Cal Newport’s best-selling book Deep work is a professional activity performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that causes you to work to the best of your abilities and push your limits. Concentrating on the task in hand and refusing to create room for anything else ensures maximum performance and trains your brain to work intensely, retain information, and think deeply.

Maintaining your concentration levels is also made possible by taking breaks and avoiding burnout. Many people fall into the trap of overworking because they feel they are “running out of time” but overworking only leads to fatigue and negatively affects the quality of your work. So, schedule small but effective breaks into your work and prioritize getting adequate rest.

Multitasking can also interfere with how well you carry out tasks. It often leads to burnout, underperforming, and harms your work. Therefore, avoid it and learn to focus on doing one thing at a time. As you plan your day, focus on doing similar tasks at a certain period, and avoid jumping from one task to another without completing the one you are working on.

Remember that your environment also plays an important role where your work is concerned. Controlling your work environment by freeing it from clutter and influencing what happens around you matters if you are to preserve your focus as you work. Eliminating noise and working at a quiet place expands your attention span and ensures productivity. So, make sure you work in a quiet space or put your headphones on if you can’t control what’s happening around you.

Upholding your focus when working is the key to completing tasks and succeeding in your various fields of endeavor. It’s not easy but it’s possible and with enough practice, you can do it. You only have to commit to what you are doing and implement the methods already mentioned.
