Importance of Living In the Moment

· Leadership,Entrepreneur

"The mass of people lead lives of quiet desperation. They are so occupied with the factitious cares and superfluously coarse labors of life that its finer fruits cannot be plucked by them."

This is how one poet summarizes the sorry state of affairs in this modern era. Life pretty much is a series of labors and worries for most people. They shuffle through life weighed down by inconsequential worries and anxieties that they barely have time to enjoy and pluck the metaphorical fruit of life. They are barely in the moment, and their life is an ever-continuing chase for something they even cannot define themselves.

The only way out of this fix is to learn to live in the moment. When we talk about living in the moment, or the Now, we are talking about getting rid of unnecessary burdens and worries. One has to learn to take the day as it comes, deal with every moment, and enjoy it fully. Yes, it takes a lot of courage to get rid of our baggage. Most of us are now used to the burden of carrying our loads that the thought of being free is a foreign philosophy. Most define themselves by their anxieties and regrets.

However, when we let go, we really get to live a life that we have always wanted. Let us take a look at some of the advantages of seizing every moment of our life.

1. A stress-free, healthy life

“It is hard to dance with the devil on your back, so shake it off,” sang one artist. Most of us carry the devil of our past with us. We are haunted by regrets and mistakes of the past. Added to that, we always fret about tomorrow. This is a prison of the mind where our devils weigh us down so we cannot get to dance in the metaphoric sense. We are rarely in the present. Yet if we get rid of these worries, we can lead a stress-free life. Stress, medically speaking is not good for the body. It weakens the immune system and also exposes us to a vast number of chronic illnesses.

If, however, we rid ourselves of worries over things we cannot change or control, we get to live in the present. Our physical and mental health will be in top-shelf condition and we will get to experience a full, brighter life. Happiness is not a fairy tale. It is very much an attainable state. So take that step and do not fret over things you cannot control. It is good for you.

2. It boosts productivity

Those who do not seize the moment live a life of fear. They are scared of failure; they are haunted by past mistakes and thus they are scared to take chances. When our fears rule us, we let opportunities pass us by without even bothering to try. Yet, when we fully grasp the Now, we are always pushed to action. We know that our actions are the ones that determine and define the present. So we grab every opportunity that comes. We focus on the tasks at hand and never waver for we never want to miss a moment. This boosts performance and productivity. In the end, our lives are always progressive and fulfilling.

3. You become self-reliant, confident, and successful

"To thine own self be true," Shakespeare said. Most people are conformists. They do things just because everyone is doing it. In the end, they are miserable because their actions barely define who they are at heart. When we follow the crowd, most times we betray who we are at heart. That betrayal always comes as regrets and overwhelming sadness. If, on the other hand, we are in the Now, we learn to do things our way. We define ourselves by our own actions and we live true to ourselves and get to happy and confident. This creates a profound harmony within you, where you are at one with yourself. And you get to maintain your integrity, freedom, and independence. This will lead to unsurpassed success in whatever field you are in. It is Thoreau said, “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours”

4. You will get to appreciate life and beauty more

People who live in the moment experience a joyful, vivid, and adventurous life. People who live in the Now are defined by their curiosity and enthusiasm. They are filled with wonder and they are driven to discover and try out new things, whether it is music, art, or travels. In this way, their lives are never drab. They get to appreciate many things and their lives get to be colorful and diverse. In other words, they live their lives to the fullest, they do not put limits on themselves since their minds and souls are free.

In conclusion, living in the moment brings the best out of you. You will get to enjoy the most out of life, without being weighed down by anything at all. So don’t live a life of desperation, and don’t treat life as a wayward station. We are here to live to our fullest potential. Do not limit yourself.
